Nature and Wildlife

At first glance, you may assume that during the winter all animals (including us humans) either escape the bitter cold by flying South or by hibernating. But if you look closely, you will find that there is quite a bit of wildlife that is resilient and endures the short days and long nights of the season. The best place to find traces of them? In the snow of course! On your next snowshoe or cross-country ski around Ivry-sur-le-Lac, pay attention to the endless tracks of animals in the snow all around us. You can spot anything from the tiniest footprints of mice to the massive hooves’ marks of moose if you’re lucky enough to stumble upon them. You will soon realize that there is an abundance of life in the winter months. You can use this guide from the Nature Conservancy of Canada to help you decipher the clues left in the snow:

If you would like to share a photo of an animal sighting in Ivry-sur-le-Lac please send it to info@ivry-sur-le-lac.qc.ca  and we will share the best one in the next newsletter! Stay tuned as each month we will feature a different subject and fun facts about it!

The Nature and Wildlife section, which is written by your council member, Mrs. Gabriella Opas, will be regularly published in your municipal newsletter where various topics related to the environment will be discussed.

Snow on my roof, how should I proceed?

The amount of snow accumulating on a roof will vary depending upon the position of the house in relation to its environment.  In some cases, the snow may never need to be removed.  In the event that snow accumulation is significant, particularly during periods of thaw or during an ice storm, the load increases considerably and the natural drainage of the roof may be compromised by ice formation, thus requiring certain steps to be undertaken.

As a preventative measure and as well as for everyone’s safety, the Régie du bâtiment du Québec recommends the following measures to homeowners:

  • Remove the excessive accumulated snow in order to avoid the risk of collapse.
  • Take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of people walking near the building.
  • Pay attention to snow loads on vaulted or rounded roofs, especially if these loads are not evenly distributed.
  • Entrust snow removal to qualified companies with the appropriate expertise and equipment.

By entrusting this task to companies with the appropriate methods and equipment, you avoid damaging the waterproof membrane of the roof.  However, should you decide to remove the snow from the roof yourself, it is recommended that you do so from the ground, using a roof shovel equipped with a telescopic handle to prevent any risk of falling.  Keep in mind that the operation consists of removing the excess snow, leaving a layer of 10 to 15 cm to avoid damaging the roof.

 Signs of risk of collapse;

  • Appearance of cracks on the walls
  • Interior doors that jam or rub when opening or closing
  • Unusual crackling noises are heard
  • Ceiling distortion

Shoreline Residents – There is water on my property, what should I do?

It is normal, during snowmelt, to have an accumulation of water along the edge of the lake due to the higher lake level and the increased level of the water table and river flows. The absorption capacity of the land is therefore diminished during this period.

If, on the other hand, you notice that the presence of water on your land persists, several factors must be considered, including the possible role of climate change in the evolution of the water table and its behaviour.

If you wish to improve your situation, it is recommended that you refer to a professional, who would be qualified to offer you an action plan to improve the natural drainage of the water present. As this is not an area of municipal expertise, there is no need to refer this issue to the municipality.

If the action plan involves work at or near the shoreline, within fifteen (15) meters of the shoreline from the high-water mark, you must consult the Municipality at this stage in order to obtain a certificate of authorization from the Urban Planning Department before starting the work.

The urban planning department will analyze your request and ensure that the work to be carried out complies with municipal regulations.
