Closing of our administrative office – Labour Day

 Please note that our administrative offices will be closed on Monday, September 6 for Labour Day.

 The entire team will be back on Tuesday, September 7, starting at 9:00 a.m. Thank you for your understanding.

 What is the origin of Labour Day?

This international holiday as it is celebrated today has its origins in the worker’s movement’s struggle to create the 8-hour work shift. Depending on the country, this holiday is celebrated in the spring or fall and is often a public holiday like it is here. This day is sometimes associated with other festivities and popular traditions. In many countries, it is not uncommon to see demonstrations of the worker’s movement on this day.

Nautical Patrol

Since the end of June, the municipal water patrol is present on Lac Manitou. Similar to last year, firefighters from the Régie d’Incendie des Monts are on duty, and they interact with boaters.

The interventions are mainly focused on speed awareness, the permissible towing hours, and the obligation to have the decal clearly visible on all boats present on the lake.

The patrollers are present on the lake to make boaters aware of boating safety and respect for the regulations by transmitting information. They also have the authority to issue notices of violation.

In order to ensure the safety of everyone, it is essential that each boater respects the rules.

 We appreciate your full and usual cooperation!

Soil Erosion of Shorelines – Good Boating Practices

 In certain situations, human activity exacerbates the erosion phenomenon known as “accelerated erosion”. For example, motorized boat traffic and shoreline deforestation are two main activities that accelerate the natural erosion of the shoreline.

 The lapping of the waves against the shores stemming from motorized boats causes shoreline erosion.

 The extent of the movement of the waves will have more or less of an impact depending on the height of the waves hitting the shore. It is therefore important to understand the link between the speed of a boat and the wake it produces:

  •  Displacement speed – near the shore and in small streams, in order to minimize the effects of the movement of the waves, adopt a slow speed that displaces little water.
  • Transition speed – is the intermediary speed between displacement speed and planing speed. In effect, the bow tends to rise while the stern sinks, thus causing a significant wave. This speed should therefore occur away from the shoreline.
  • Planing speed – although the height of the wave produced during planing speed is usually lower than that produced during transition speed, the wake produced in planing speed is long, fast and deep under water; it has a lot of energy. Once the wave reaches shallow water, the potential for erosion and destruction becomes significant. Therefore, this speed must be used only away from the shoreline.

 Out of respect for the protection of the shoreline and the environment, the Municipality strongly recommends that you do not use a ballast system, such as a “wake” or other type.

Construction or renovation of docks – some contraints

Do you want to repair or replace your dock? If so, before venturing out with this work, we recommend that you contact us to discuss your plans by email at inspecteur@ivry-sur-le-lac.qc.ca or by phone at (819) 321-2332, extension 3702.

 In addition, to help you with your preparations, here are some constraints to think about before finalizing your construction plans:

  • Only one dock is permitted per waterfront property;
  • All docks must be located at a minimum distance of 3 metres from the extension of the lateral lot lines towards the water;
  • A dock may have a maximum area of 32.5 sq. metres (349.8 sq ft.) and a maximum length of 12 metres (39 ft., 4 in.);
  • A walkway may be installed on the shoreline to reach the dock. The area of the gangway must be deducted from the maximum area permitted for the dock;
  • The same applies to a raft. The total area of the dock and raft must not exceed 32.5 square metres.

Programme RénoRégion

More investment, more help for homeowners

La Société de l’habitation du Québec (SHQ) has authorized an increase in the overall amount granted, with the MRC des Laurentides receiving three times the amount of the previous year, $700,000.

It is thanks to the steps taken with the SHQ that the MRC des Laurentides has succeeded in obtaining this increased amount. In the context of the shortage of affordable housing, and driven by the desire to help as many low-income citizens as possible to remain in their homes requiring essential work, the work of the MRC des Laurentides in this file is to be commended. A greater number of citizens will be able to benefit from this financial assistance!

Shoreline Strips … so important!

Following the inspection of the shoreline strips that took place during the summer of 2020, some of you have received a letter of awareness regarding the compliance of these strips. Recently, a second inspection was conducted. During this second inspection, we found that a majority of the non-compliant shorelines have been greatly improved, and this only by cessation of grass cutting in this protection strip, which is excellent and we thank you for it! However, the compliance of a shoreline strip does not stop with the vegetation, but also with the structures present in this shoreline strip. In fact, according to the regulations, the riparian protection strip must generally be left under vegetation cover except for the installation of a staircase when the slope of the land is greater than 30%.

Therefore, in order to achieve a compliant shoreline on all levels, the stone slabs, concrete “Japanese step” style in the shoreline strip must also be removed. Although these elements may have been on your property for a long time, it is not permitted to leave them there. While these stones may enhance your shoreline experience, they contribute to direct water runoff into the lake. As you know, rainwater absorbs many airborne pollution particles and when it reaches the ground it carries with it the sediments present on the ground which unfortunately contributes to the nutrient input resulting in the possible eutrophication of the water body, which is undesirable.

Definition of “Eutrophication”

Excessive input of nutrients into waters, resulting in plant growth, oxygen depletion and ecosystem imbalance.

 It is again with a view to conserving and improving the quality of the water bodies in Ivry-sur-le-Lac that we insist on the benefits of bringing the riparian protection strip into compliance with the regulations in force. Every little bit helps, and it is unfortunately not at the precipice that we have to change, because it will be too late. Now that you know the importance of the riparian buffer, it is time to redouble your efforts.

 On the one hand, a huge thank you for your noticed efforts and thank you for all the undertakings to come toward the protection of our magnificent bodies of water since we would all like to count on the lakes being free of invasive plants and contaminations of any kind.

 Let’s do whatever it takes to ensure that your grandchildren will be able to enjoy the same splendor that you have enjoyed!

 Thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Reminder – Do I have to register my non-motorized boat if I use a lake on the territory of the Municipality?

Well, yes! In order to ensure the conservation of the water quality of our bodies of water and to facilitate the work of our water patrollers, it is necessary to register all boats in order to obtain a decal. As for a motorized boat, the decal is your right of passage and access to the water.

These are the same requirements for kayaks, canoes, sailboats, paddleboards or any other non-motorized watercraft.  You must fill out the registration form:

https://ivry-sur-le-lac.qc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/2021_Formulaire_Embar_N_Motorisee_VA_V1.pdf

 Please note that the non-motorized watercraft decal is free for residents of Ivry-sur-le-Lac.

 The washing of boats is also a requirement when launching your boat and is mainly the only preventive element that we control to prevent contamination of water bodies. The boats are washed free of charge at the washing station for decal holders.
