Waste collection calendar

The new waste collection schedule was added to the mailing of your tax bill in January. Please note that a decrease in the frequency of garbage collection, the black bin, will be effective from February to April inclusively.

Why reduce the number of waste collections?
• Reduce the amount of material going to landfill and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
• Reduce collection and landfill costs that directly affect the tax rate.
• Increase recycling and composting of residual materials.
• Meet the objectives of the Quebec Residual Materials Management Policy.

Did you know that…every ton of waste diverted from landfill reduces our GHG emissions by 2 tons!

It is also very important to properly position these bins to ease of collection.

For more information, please see: https://www.ivry-sur-le-lac.qc.ca/matieres-residuelles/.

Snow invites itself to the sorting center – Green bin

As soon as the precipitation turns to snow, unfortunately, the sorting centre is affected. In fact, when you don’t clear snow from the cover of your bin prior to pick-up, the snow is collected in the truck at the same time as the recyclable materials, which causes significant difficulties at the sorting stage. A significant amount of snow accumulates, so it makes sorting difficult.

It is therefore very important to properly remove the snow from the lid of your green bin before it is emptied! Thank you in advance for your cooperation. When you understand the impacts, it’s easier to act!

Organic matter: Congratulations!

Recycling your organic materials is an important deed: it’s your contribution to the well-being of the environment. This simple gesture helps reduce the amount of material sent for disposal and thus reduces negative effects on the environment, such as greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, returning organic matter to the soil in the form of compost contributes to soil health and plant growth.

In Ivry-sur-le-Lac, the rate of diversion of residual waste averaged 25% for the year 2019.

Congratulations! Let’s continue these efforts that are becoming simple daily routines!

Snow Removal – please do not put your snow on the street

With the snowfall we’ve had since the beginning of the winter and which will continue for the next few months, the snow removal crews are continually working to keep our roads clear. We ask you, for the safety of all, not to dump your snow on municipal roads but instead to find space on your own properties to do so.

Ashes from your fireplace : (unfortunately) the perfect fertilizer for blue-green algae!

Some of you may have heard about the benefits of using ashes from your fireplace to fertilize your gardens.

It is true! As the ashes from your fireplace are rich in phosphorus, potassium and other trace elements, le Ministère de l’Agriculture, Pêcherie et Alimentation recommends the use of ash as a soil fertilizer.

The link between blue-green algae or cyanobacteria and phosphorus

Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, are naturally present in our lakes. However, when water warms up and is too rich in nutrients, these organisms proliferate (water bloom) and can compromise the quality of bodies of water.

Why not use ashes as fertilizers in wetlands or other bodies of water

As ashes are high in phosphorus, a chemical element essential for plant growth, the excessive intake of phosphorus or phosphates in our bodies of water causes a significant increase in vegetation and consequently the proliferation of algae that ends up consuming all available resources, thereby asphyxiating pre-existing species.

Therefore, to avoid contaminating our lakes and wetlands and to eliminate the proliferation of algae, including blue-green algae or cyanobacteria, the government recommends a ban on the spreading of fertilizer on riparian strips. We therefore ask that you not use ashes from your fireplace to fertilize land close to the shoreline.

Cold ashes, after about 4 weeks, can be placed in the brown bins.

Time Change

It’s almost time to change the time! This year the changeover to Daylight Savings Time will take place on Sunday morning, March 8th at 2:00 am. Please remember to ‘’spring forward’’ one hour!

A bit of history…Did you know that it was in 1918, during the First World War, that the House of Commons of Canada passed the Act respecting the use of daylight in order to conserve electricity and maximize the enjoyment of daily sunshine. Since 2007, the Daylight Savings Time period has been extended by 4 or 5 weeks. A way to be green by saving energy!

Sport fishing

Sport fishing in Quebec is regulated by the Ministère des Forêts, Faune et Parcs. Lac Manitou is in a zone that completely prohibits sport fishing in winter.
However, to find out where it is possible to practice sport fishing in winter, visit the following site: https://mffp.gouv.qc.ca/publications/enligne/faune/reglementation-peche/periodes-peche.asp

Controle of septic tank emptying – By-law no. 2009-031

A septic tank must be emptied at least once every two years for a permanent residence and at least once every four years if the residence is used seasonally.

Once done, it is your responsibility to send proof of the work done to the Municipality. Also an annual maintenance contract is required for certain septic systems (Ecoflo, Bionest, Enviro-Septic, etc.).

All records must be up to date, so be sure to send us your proof of emptying or maintenance contracts if this has not already been done.

Construction permits – these must be displayed!

We often receive calls or e-mails asking us if specific residents have a valid permit to conduct work on their properties. We thought it wise to remind you that construction permits must be clearly displayed in a visible place during the whole period during which the works are being performed.

In accordance with article 12 of le Règlement 2013-059 sur les permis et certificats, applicants for a permit or certificate of authorization must «afficher tout permis ou tout certificat d’autorisation de manière à ce qu’il soit bien en vue, durant toute la durée des travaux ou de l’usage autorisé par le permis ou le certificat».

This way, you avoid having your neighbours call to complain about works being carried out without a valid permit.

2020, a year of 366 days!

The year 2020 is a leap year, so February will have 29 days.

Do you know what causes leap years? It’s because the time it takes the Earth to make one complete revolution around the Sun, is actually 365.25 days. That is why a day is added to the calendar in February, every four years. This adjustment is necessary because without it the timing of the seasons would gradually shift from the calendar as we know it. The leap year as been around since the advent of the Gregorian calendar in 1582.
