\u00a0What is food loss and waste?<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0It is defined as any edible part of food intended for human consumption that is diverted, degraded, lost or discarded at any stage of the bio-food system, including food recovery and redistribution and at the consumer level.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Key facts<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0According to 2022 data, 7.5 million tons of food enter the Quebec biofood system. Of this amount, 1.2 million tons, or 16%, of edible food needed to meet the food demands of Quebecers is lost or wasted. Our bio-food system in Quebec generates 20 M tons of greenhouse gases (GHG) of which 3.6 M tons are directly associated with edible food, which represents 18%.<\/p>\n
